New York Chapter

The New York Chapter of Continental Societies, Incorporated
Since 1961

Who we are.......Women who care.

What we do............Women who help.

The name “Continental Society” originated from a small group of women in New York City during the early 1950's when they began to give benefit affairs, donate clothing, household furnishings and funds to aid needy families of the Virgin Islands. It was Marie Poston whose husband was from the Virgin Islands, introduced a “hands across the sea” concept, and became the leading force in this group on the Continent for the purpose of continuing to help the Islanders. The group adapted the name “The Continental Society for the Children of the Virgin Islands”.

The New York Chapter of Continental Societies, Incorporated was chartered in 1961 with Betty Saitch as the organizer and first President. The New York Chapter was sponsored by the Philadelphia Chapter. Our charter members were: Eva Boone, Teresa Bush, Eloise Dargan, Selbra Haynes, Julie Hunter, Rose Morgan; Fannie Pierre, Helen Procope, Betty Saitch and Dorothy Skinner.
