DELAWARE AREA CHAPTER OF THE CONTINENTAL SOCIETIES, INCORPORATED
Recognizing the direr need for more hands, hearts, minds and money to aid our children at risk, and specifically in the Delaware area, our Organizer JACQUELINE FAULCON sought help. She had been exposed to the outstanding work of the Continental Societies through her friends the late Ora Brinkley Bundy, founder of the Philadelphia Chapter, and Jeanne R. Holmes, then President of the South Jersey Chapter.
Jacqueline and Jeanne talked about starting a chapter in Delaware. This dialogue continued for three years. Finally, on a hot summer afternoon, in August 1990, at the Back Burner Restaurant in Hockessin, Delaware the nucleus of of our unique chapter was formed. Jacqueline called upon her dear friends-Arthur Mae Rice in Chester County, Pennsylvania and Mary Wyche in Dover, Delaware for assistance in identifying women who sought to aid children with special need with devotion, creativity, service and love.
Jeanne introduced the group to the new South Jersey Chapter president, the late Harriet Porter, who outlined our duties and placed us in the loving hands of Continental Edna Calhoun, the National Membership Chair. We LOVE you, Continental Edna. Continental Edna sent us our materials and we got to work with the Chester County Region Head Start Programs.
Continental Edna, members of the Washington, D.C. Chapter, National President Continental Evelyn Means, our sponsoring chapter president Continental Jean Milam, Continental Liaison Jeane Holmes and other attended one of our monthly meetings at the Christiana Hilton Inn. What an inspirational session!
The Installation Weekend was held at the Christiana Hilton Inn, Newark, Delaware, during the weekend of August 16th, 1991. A festive weekend began with a Get Acquainted Luncheon on August 16th. The Chapter was honored to have in attendance our National President Continental Evelyn Means, National Vice President Dee Evelyn Matthews, Membership Chair Continental Edna Calhoun, officers of the South Jersey Chapter -our sponsoring chapter, as well as other visiting Chapter officers and members. Following the luncheon, the History Continentals were taken on a sight seeing tour of the Winterthur Museum and Gardens. Several Delaware historical galleries were visited where artifacts are displayed. After the tour, an exquisite dinner was held at Branmar Plaza' Hunan's Chinese Restaurant. One of the highlights of the evening was a buffet dinner, games and dancing with the theme-Charleston Back with the Roaring Twenties. Serving as Chairperson of the Installation Weekend was President Jacqueline Faulcon, Co-chairperson, Vice President Mary Wyche and Sub-committee chairs, Mrs. Anne Martin and Mrs. Jennie Hudgins.
The morning of August 17th, 1991, included a Diamond Continental Prayer Breakfast, and orientation period and a very impressive installation ceremony. Following the installation, a luncheon-fashion show was held. Among those in attendance were State public officials as well as representatives from the three agencies selected to be the recipients of our fundraiser for the year. There agencies were: Child, Incorporated, Children's Bureau and Delaware Guidance Services for Children. Congratulatory letters were received by the Governor of the State of Delaware, the Mayor of the City of Wilmington including other state, city county officials.
Thus, the dynamic splendiferous 36th chapter of Continental Societies, Incorporated was born-THE DELAWARE AREA CHAPTER.
