The Continental Societies Inc. is an international public service organization dedicated to the socioeconomic and cultural welfare of underprivileged children and youth.

Bermuda’s introduction to the organization began in November 1960 when Mrs. Leola Edness, Mrs. Moira Cann and Mrs. Audrey Abbott met to form a club.  Through Mrs. Edness’ association with a member of the Continental Society of New York, the Bermuda chapter of the Continentals had its beginning. The first official meeting held on March 12, 1961 and included four more members. Sponsored by the New York Chapter, the Bermuda Chapter was officially installed on the 19th of May, 1962 as an affiliate chapter of the Continental Societies in the USA.  The Continental Society of Bermuda is a registered charity (#006) and the ONLY International Chapter of Continental Societies, Inc.

Dynamic leadership and membership committed to serve and make a difference has enabled the Bermuda Chapter to meet its goal of improving the quality of life for children.   As a testimony to the cohesiveness of the group and the rewards of participation, there are many members of the Bermuda Continentals who are celebrating more than 30 years of membership and membership spans two to three generations in a few cases. Membership can be demanding but the results are very rewarding and are what keeps us going.   The organization’s motto sums it up – “there is a destiny that makes us sisters, none goes her way alone.  All that we send into the lives of others come back into our own”.

The organizations stated objectives are to:

  • Foster, promote and develop the welfare of children in Bermuda;
  • Advance their educational opportunities;
  • Improve their recreational facilities and exposure;
